Changing strings for acoustic guitar

Changing your acoustic guitar strings can be a tricky manoevre so here is a step by step guide to changing a string.

Firstly remove the old string.

Loosen it by detuning it, turning the tuner on the headstock until the string is very loose and you can unwind it or even

cut it if you have an appropriate tool.  The string is held in at the other end, on the main body of the guitar by a pin.

There are 6 pins positioned on a bit of wood, or bit of metal, that is called the bridge of your guitar.

Pull the pin out, use your fingers,  or you can use a peg winder or even a fork to help if the pin is tightly squeezed in.  If

the string has broken, you can remove the two remaining parts separately and don't have to worry about the detuning.

So there should now be a gap, and a hole where the pin was previously; and you should have your replacement string

ready. You should have the appropriate acoustic guitar strings, which will be one of: Bottom (bass) E, A, D, G, B, Top E.

Take the string out the packet and you'll find one end has a small metal ball on the end,  thread this into the hole and

place the pin back from whence it came.  Push the pin right down until its in place, pulling the string out in the other

direction.

The other end of the string can now be threaded through the machine head at the other end of the guitar.  Wind it up,

making sure you wind it in the same direction the other acoustic guitar strings are wound.  Have a look at which

direction the string goes when you start winding.

Give the string a little pull away from the body of your guitar as you tune up to iron out the kinks.

When you buy acoustic guitar strings you can get them in different gauges.  I would suggest a light set of strings for a

start.  Maybe 10 or 11 gauge would be good.  Move up to 12 or 13 if it starts getting too easy.

Acoustic guitar strings are made of steel.  You tend to get two plain steel strings - the B and the E, the thinnest two.

Then the others are made of steel but they have another string wound on top of it.  Generall its an alloy made of copper,

zinc and brass.  These are the heavier bassier strings : E (the thickest), A, D, and G.
