Bodhran drums are quite recognisable but they come in all variety of sizes and frames.  They are played with a tipper which is small wooden handle with ball ends.  The Bodhrán is an irish drum which is made with a goatskin head.  There are also varieties with synthetic or animal skins though most are made with with goatskin.  They usually have a hardwood frame often with a bar or  coss bars at the back.  They range from between 25cm and 65cm in diameter. You are most likely to find something between 35cm to 45cm.
The goatskin is tacked to the frame though there are some new modern models that can be tuned mechanically like drumkits but most are tuned with a hex key.  If you cannot tune your Bodhrán, i mean if your Bodhran is untunable, which is fairly common, you can heat the skin with a hairdryer to make it tighter or sprinkle it with water to make it looser.  They're real goatskins so they do respond to heat.  Sprinkle the water then massage the water into the skin. This can nullify any pinging or ringing sounds.  If you use a hairdryer to tighten it a bit,and get a bit more ping, be very careful and heat the skin evenly and slowly, making sure there are no hot or cold patches, and don't stay in one spot too long.
There was a World Bodhran Championships held annually in County Kerry Ireland in May/June with a bodhran competition, and a musical gathering of bodhran minds however it got cancelled this year although they're planning to be back for 2012.
