Bongos are two small drums attached to each other, the larger drum is called hembra (female) in spanish and the smaller is called macho (male). The bongos are mainly played by hand in a steady rhythm of eight called ostinato.  Bongos are more high pitched in sound than congos and are a very portable instrument enabling you to carry them anywhere.

The bongos should be held behind the knees, larger drum on right hand side if right handed. They are played by striking
the palm and fingers against the skin in rhythms.

A man who plays bongos is called a bongocero.

Bongo drumming was first started in cuba, in the style called 'changui and son', at the time of the slave trade in the late
19th century.

Bongos evolved from the Abakua Drum trio ' bonko' and its larger drum, 'bonko enmiwewos'. These drums are apart of
the main Abakua religion service of Cuba.

Made of

Bongos are made of caramic and raw skin or goatskin , mainly found in Morocco, where they are called tbila. They used to be made of wood bodies during the slave trade.

The music is a classic accompliment to flamenco and spanish style beats.

Tuning

Should be best left to the experts as requires a delicate touch, or done with a small spanner adjusting the lugs.
