Conga Factfile
The Conga  comes in three sizes, the biggest of which is called the Tumbadora. These drums play the lowest pitch of the three.  The Conga is the next biggest and plays the mid-ranges pitches and is generally the most versatile.  The high end and smallest conga drum is the quinto.  They were made famous in Cuba and stand about 30 inches tall. A person who

plays Congas is called a Conguero. They are most commonly played in latin music, jazz and reggae and originate from Africa in the 1900's.

Strokes
There are 5 basic strokes:
1. Open tone - played with four fingers near tip of the head.
2. Muffled or mute tone - like the open tone but holding the four fingers against the head to muffle
3. Bass tone - full palm on head
4. Slap tone - the most difficult to play
5. Touch tone - just touching the fingers and palm to the head
The Conga is usually a hand drum although sticks may be used.  The most common rhythm is called the Marcha.
Tuning - Congas are able to be tuned to different notes. The modern day drums have a screw and lug tension head system. They are often tuned to the open tone being percussive instruments.

What Are They Made From?
The Conga were originally made form olive barrels and cattle or buffalo hides but today are made from synthetic materials and natural raw hide.

Famous Congureos
The Godfather of Latin music or 'The king of hard hands' is Ray Barretto, he played with the Rolling Stones and later

won a grammy for his efforts, having a hit called 'el watusi'.

Candido Camero plays two or three congas at a time alongside a bongo and is still wowing the crowds at the age of 88.

Armando Pereza taught himself the conga in one afternoon and is a long standing member of the band Santana.

The Healing power of the drum
The drum has been used for alzheimer patients who have an inability to focus for long periods of time. It has been used to shed anger pain and negative emotions, and alter brain waves inducing a trance like state, without the complex chord structure of other instruments, relying on a persons natural rhythm and passion for life.

Gigs and events
Check out www.carnivalcollective.org.uk a 30 - 50 piece band that is mainly percussive. They come from the Sussex coast and are Reggae, funk and latin music based. They are playing at the Secret Garden Pub, battersea, London on Saturday November 12th 19:00 hours.
