First off heres a great video of fitting some nylon guitar strings.
You can buy nylon guitar strings or spanish guitar strings here at the music master and we've got some handy videos that we hope you find useful.
Many players use their nails for finger picking classical guitar strings. This video has some tips on how to trim, polish and shape your nails.
Nylon guitar strings have a much lower tension than their steel counterparts meaning they are a lot less harsh on your fingers. Sets of these strings usually have three clear nylon strings and three strings wound with silver plated copper. The tone is full and warm. Generally these strings don't stay in tune as long as steel strings because of the tension.
Traditionally they don't have a ball end (though some modern sets do) and you have to tie them to the bridge (see the video at the top for a good demonstration of how to do this).
In the old days, classical guitar strings were made of gut. During the 20th century synthetic materials such as nylon were developed. Many guitar players were having a hard time finding cat gut strings during the second world war. Albert Augustine, a luthier, decided to try the new nylon thread that was developed for surgical uses (also for parachutes) as an alternative guitar string to cat gut. The results were good and gave classical guitars a very different sound. Nylon was lightweight and didn't have the same density as cat gut strings. Nylon strings were not quite as bright as their gut counterparts but were more durable and much easier to get hold of.
Here we have a video about the technique of getting good tone out of your classical guitar. He mentions taking time to listen to other players which is definitely a good tip!
Here we are looking at the postion of your left hand. (Right hand for lefties!) Developing a good technique to start with on your guitar will help you for years to come.
I hope you found some of these videos and tips useful. Now where did I leave my guitar?!!
