A guitar tuner is a very helpful piece of equipment for the practicing guitar player, as it helps you keep your strings as accurately tuned as possible. If you want to buy a guitar tuner, you'll want to compare guitar tuners before making your selection, of course.
A guitar tuner uses electronics to pick up the rate of vibration in the air of the vibrating string. If you play an electric guitar, your electronic guitar tuner gets directly plugged into with your cord that usually you have plugged into your amplifier (or, it may have its own ¼ inch cable that comes with it). For people who don't have "perfect pitch" hearing and for new and intermediate guitar students who don't yet have a well-developed ear for pitch, the guitar tuner keeps your instrument tuned to the right frequency.
When you go to buy a guitar tuner, you'll want to compare guitar tuners in a few different ways. One of these is the readout mechanism on the tuner. You'll want to have a readout that is highly accurate-that is, that tells you with as much precision as possible how close your string is to being in tune, and if it's not whether it's still too high or too low in its generated pitch. You'll discover when you compare guitar tuners that some of them have additional "bells and whistles" on them such as, for example, a metronome. But if you're new to the guitar, you shouldn't worry about these other features. All you need to focus on is that you want to buy a guitar tuner that fits with your type of guitar (electric or acoustic) and is easy for you to understand as it gives you its readout.
Incidentally, some people simply buy a metronome that includes a digital "pitch pipe" with it. That is, it may have a continuously-sounding tone of one of the strings on your guitar that you tune that string to, and then tune the rest of your strings to that string once it is in tune. But, again, you may not feel that your ear is yet sensitive enough to do this accurately. Also, you may still find that you can get your guitar tuned closer to perfection with an electronic guitar tuner.
Many people buy a few different guitar tuners for different practice and playing situations. For instance, if you're going to be practicing or playing in a dark place, you'll need a guitar tuner that lights up on the front to indicate pitch. But if you're going to be practicing at home with your lights on, a tuner with a gauge-type readout might be your best choice.
So, don't buy a guitar tuner until you compare guitar tuners. And don't be afraid to have more than one.
