Before you buy a ukulele, heres a few interesting bits and bobs about the ukulele. The ukulele is from Hawaii, it is a four stringed instrument and is easily known as a uke. It is called a chordophone but looks like a minature guitar, making it portable and easier to carry around.
Ukuleles originated in the 19th century and come in four sizes:
soprano, concert, tenor and baritone.
The name means 'the gift that came here' and is translated as 'jumping flea' it is played similarly to a guitar.
It first was made in the 1880's by three madeiran cabinet makers, Manuel Nunes, Jose do espirito santo and Augustus Dias.
They made it based on two portuguese instruments called the cavaquinho and rajao.
Ukuleles are mostly made of mahogany or spruce or the cheaper ply or laminate. The most expensive ukuleles which cost thousands of dollars are made of koa, a hawaiian wood.
Shapes
They most commonly come in figure of eight shapes, but they also come in cutaway, and oval (pineapple ukulele), boat paddle and square which is commonly made out of old wooden cigar boxes.
Strings
Usually only four stringed but can come in 6 - 8 strings which are paired.
Tuning
The standard tone is D6 or C6 or may be tuned to open tunings.

Ernest Kaai
The first Hawaiian player from the age of 19 was playing and was said to be the best player of Hawaii.
'King' Benny Nawahi
Played with one hand and even behind his head. He later became blind and still carried on playing.

Stephin Merritt - Magnetic fields
provided the soundtrack to 'Lemony snickett. Born February 1966, is gay and suffers from hyperacusis, a hearing condition that causes sound to feed back louder than normal.
Tune Yards - Hatari - means 'danger' in Swahili
voted 'the most startling ukulele player around today'
Mirah - born september 17 1974 in Pennsylvannia. Her name means a 'good day' or 'holy day' in spanish, she is a lesbian and has a ukulele song called, 'You think it's like this, but really it's like this'
